NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) – Univision's midseason lineup includes a new weight loss show, "Dale con Ganas," co-produced by the creator of the "Biggest Loser," as well as "El Gran Show de los Peques," a new variety show showcasing childrens' talents.

The Spanish-language network, which aims to beat the English-language broadcasters in total viewers within the next five years, often tops at least one of them in the nightly ratings.

The network is also bringing back the reality/beauty show "Nuestra Belleza Latina"for a sixth season, beginning March 4. Next year will also mark the 50th anniversary of the returning Saturday night show "Sabado Gigante," hosted by Don Francisco.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – LightSquared's prospects for getting its wireless network off the ground were dealt another blow this week as U.S. government tests found that the signal of the telecom startup would cause "harmful interference" to a majority of GPS devices.

Preliminary analysis of testing of the company's planned network conducted last month showed the wireless network would not interfere with cell phones but would cause "harmful interference to the majority of other tested general purpose GPS receivers," the U.S. Defense and Transportation departments said in a joint statement late Wednesday.

LightSquared is owned by billionaire hedge fund manager Philip Falcone. The company in June revised its plan to deploy a high-speed wireless network serving roughly 260 million people after interference issues arose with GPS devices that are used by the military and in civilian applications ranging from aviation to agriculture.

Falcone, who could separately face civil fraud charges over alleged manipulative trading in debt securities from 2006 to 2008 and other trading violations, bet much of his Harbinger Capital Partners money on LightSquared.

Falcone's hedge fund empire has shrunk from $26 billion to around $5 billion, and roughly half of that money is tied up in LightSquared LP.

LightSquared's signals would also interfere "with a flight safety system designed to warn pilots of approaching terrain," the government statement said of a separate analysis performed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

LightSquared Chief Executive Sanjiv Ahuja said the company would work with the FAA on the terrain avoidance systems, but disagreed with the government's conclusions on general navigation devices.

"The testing further confirmed that the interference issues are not caused by LightSquared's spectrum, but by GPS devices looking into spectrum that is licensed to LightSquared," Ahuja said in a statement.

Some 500 million GPS receivers are estimated to be in use for government and commercial purposes in the United States.

The Coalition to Save Our GPS, whose membership spans several industries and includes Deere & Co, Delta Airlines, Garmin Ltd and Trimble Navigation Ltd, said the test results reveal substantial risks to everyday activities.

"It is clear that LightSquared simply refuses to accept the overwhelming technical evidence on the interference issue and continues to try to 'define away' devastating test results," said Dale Leibach, a spokesman for the group.

Deployment of LightSquared's network depends on regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission. The company has said its new deployment plan addresses many of the interference concerns and has partnered with GPS firms to develop solutions to the remaining problems.

"We have taken extraordinary measures - and at extraordinary expense - to solve a problem that is not of our making," Ahuja said, adding that the company will continue working with the federal government to allow LightSquared and GPS to coexist.

LightSquared intends to invest $14 billion over the next eight years to build its network, and aims to sell wholesale wireless services to companies which would then resell the service under their own brand names.

The national network would use satellites and land-based signals. The interference issues have arisen over the land-based portion of the network.

The FCC and National Telecommunications and Information Agency are still awaiting a final analysis and report on the testing, which will be completed over the next several weeks.

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – Ivory Coast election officials say the president's party now controls half of the parliament.
Electoral commission president Youssouf Bakayoko said early Friday that President Alassane Ouattara's party had won 127 of 254 seats in Sunday's vote.
Officials have hoped that the election can help bring stability and economic growth to this once-flourishing West African nation, which is a leading cocoa producer.
But the party of arrested ex-president Laurent Gbagbo called for a boycott of the legislative poll.
Gbagbo awaits trial at The Hague over accusations that his forces committed murder and rape after losing last year's presidential vote.
Prosecutors say about 3,000 people died in violence by both sides after Gbagbo refused to concede defeat.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A Russian fishing vessel with 32 crew members was taking on water near Antarctica on Friday. Heavy sea ice was hampering rescue efforts, and officials said it could be four or five days before anybody reaches the ship to try to rescue the crew.
The Sparta was listing at 13 degrees next to the Antarctic ice shelf in the Ross Sea, according to Maritime New Zealand. The agency said that the crew was safe and was throwing cargo overboard to lighten the ship, and that some of the crew had boarded lifeboats as a precaution.
The ship has a 1-foot (30 centimeter) hole in the hull about 5 feet (1.5 meters) below the water line, the agency said. The crew so far had managed to pump out much of the incoming water and had attached a tarpaulin over the outside of the hole to slow the water flooding in, the agency said.
The crew have asked for more pumps to be sent to them and will try and make repairs to the hull, the agency said, adding it was trying to figure out a way to deliver the pumps.
"It's a very remote, unforgiving environment," said Andrew Wright, executive secretary of the Australian-based Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, which has licensed the Sparta to catch toothfish in the Southern Ocean.
Wright said he didn't know what caused the hole, although he added that an iceberg "would be a good candidate."
The Sparta, which is 157 feet (48 meters) long, sent a distress call early Friday. Maritime New Zealand said heavy ice in the Southern Ocean would make it difficult for other ships to reach the vessel.
The Sparta's sister ship Chiyo Maru No. 3 was 290 nautical miles away and heading toward the stricken vessel but had no capacity to cut through sea ice, the agency said. A New Zealand vessel, the San Aspiring, had some ice-cutting ability and was also en route, but was four or five days away. A third vessel was just 19 nautical miles away, but it was hemmed in by heavy ice and unable to move toward the Sparta.
Ramon Davis, who is coordinating rescue efforts for Maritime New Zealand, said a C-130 Hercules plane that arrived from Antarctica flew over the scene to assess ice conditions in the area to speed up the rescue efforts. But Davis said the aircraft would not be able to pick up the crew.
Davis said there were no helicopters in the area and that another vessel remained the most viable option for trying to rescue the crew.
"It is possible the crew will have a fairly long wait for rescue," he said.
He said that if the crew manage to lighten the ship enough by getting rid of cargo and pumping out water, it's possible the hole in the hull would rise above the water line.
The crew has some emergency immersion suits that could keep them alive for a time in freezing water, Maritime New Zealand said.
The weather in the area was calm, with temperatures a relatively mild 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius).
Commission records list the captain of the Sparta, which was built in 1988, as Oleg Pavlovich Starolat, who is Russian.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – George Clooney vs. Ryan Gosling ... it really is a matter of personal preference, isn't it? And maybe it's a generational thing, too.
Both actors are sexy and gorgeous, of course, but both also have chosen difficult film roles that intentionally play down their looks. Both ooze movie-star charisma but both have displayed versatility, as well.
And both will be competing in the category of best actor in a drama at the Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 15; nominations were announced Thursday morning. Clooney is up for "The Descendants," in which he plays a father struggling to raise his two daughters while his wife is in a coma; Gosling is up for "The Ides of March," in which he plays a cunning campaign strategist for a democratic presidential hopeful ... played by Clooney. (Gosling also received a nomination for best actor in a comedy for playing a ladies man in "Crazy, Stupid, Love.")
Perhaps a little tale of the tape can help us determine an early winner:
AGE: Clooney just turned 50 this year; Gosling is 31.
HEIGHT: Clooney is 5-foot-10; Gosling is 6-foot-1.

MOST IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE: For Clooney, it's so hard to choose, simply because he's been around longer and made more movies. Maybe "Syriana" (see below) because it was so demanding both physically and emotionally. But man, is he great in "Michael Clayton." As for Gosling, he had to dig deep for "The Believer" (2001), in which he played a Jewish man who becomes an anti-Semitic skinhead. It was an early indication of his vast talent. But man, is he great in "Blue Valentine."
MOST OUT-THERE PERFORMANCE: Clooney showed his goofy side as a smooth-talking escaped convict in the Coen brothers' 2000 comedy "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Gosling fell in love with a life-sized doll named Bianca in 2007's "Lars and the Real Girl."
BRUSHES WITH OSCAR: Clooney packed on the pounds, grew a shaggy beard and became virtually unrecognizable to play a CIA operative in 2005's "Syriana," which earned him the Academy Award for best supporting actor. That same year, he also was nominated for directing and co-writing the TV news drama "Good Night, and Good Luck." Since then, he's earned two other best-actor nominations: for "Michael Clayton" (2007) and "Up in the Air" (2009). Gosling was a surprise nominee for 2006's "Half Nelson" — not because he was undeserving, far from it, but because it was such a small, little-known film. He played a middle-school teacher with a drug problem.
EMBARRASSING BEGINNINGS: Clooney rocked the mullet in the mid-'80s on the sitcom "The Facts of Life," where he played a handyman named George. Gosling was a member of "The Mickey Mouse Club" in the early 1990s, around the same time as Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
"SEXIEST MAN ALIVE" STATUS: Clooney has the rare distinction of winning the annual honor from People magazine twice: in 1997 and 2006. Gosling hasn't won — yet — but this year's winner, Bradley Cooper, has conceded that Gosling deserved the title more than he did.
ON-SCREEN ROMANCES: Clooney: Michelle Pfeiffer ("One Fine Day"); Jennifer Lopez ("Out of Sight"); Julia Roberts ("Ocean's Eleven" and "Ocean's Twelve"); Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Intolerable Cruelty"); Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"). THE WINNER: A tie. While Clooney will probably win on Golden Globe night, Gosling is so hot these days he seems unstoppable.
